Mott MacDonald worked as part of the design team, including
architects, structural engineers and real estate advisers, on the
potential redevelopment of the central terminal area at Heathrow
Airport.
As transport and traffic adviser we ensured that all development
proposals were served by high quality road and public transport
connections. A key concept that was taken forward was the
introduction of a single public transport interchange (PTI),
serving all transport modes, with associated retail and office
development.
The transport work included:
- Development of layouts for the bus and coach bays within the
PTI
- Forecourt layouts and car park access associated with the
PTI
- Road layouts to serve the above, whilst providing adequate
capacity and minimising traffic delay
- Outline design for, and assessment of the impact of, a personal
rapid transit system to connect the airport terminals to remote
parking, car rental and set down/pick up facilities.
- Assessment of the trip generation of new development within the
central terminal area, and the ability of the different transport
modes to cater for this and the air passenger
