On site at the USA’s Dulles Airport where
we designed 20km of subapron tunnels
The US$3.4 billion development programme at Dulles will improve
its ability to handle increased airport traffic. The programme
includes a network of tunnels for new systems including an
automated people mover (APM) system, a pedestrian tunnel, utility
tunnels, underground baggage conveyors and underground roads
for airport tugs.
Hatch Mott MacDonald’s role during phase 1 included detail design
and design management for the APM, baggage and tug tunnels. The
scope of work involved tunnel structures, mechanical/electrical
systems, ventilation systems and fire/life safety design for all
tunnels and the vehicle maintenance facility (VMF). Hatch Mott
MacDonald also managed the design of the security and communication
systems for the tunnels and vehicle maintenance facility.
Following the events of 9/11, Dulles was required to re-evaluate
its construction plans. Construction was completed on the initial
segment of the APM tunnels, the main terminal APM station and
concourse B and C APM stations, and the VMF.
For phase 2 of the programme – following the post 9/11
re-evaluation – Hatch Mott MacDonald is leading a team of ten
sub-consultants to complete the design of the 1875ft long, 40 ft
wide NATM pedestrian tunnel extension; the 2800ft long, twin 35ft
diameter TBM tunnels that link to a 700ft long cut-and-cover tunnel
for a baggage conveyor system; and a 2400ft long extension of the
APM twin NATM tunnels.
