We were the lead airside engineer for the new
terminal at Lester B Pearson Airport
Hatch Mott MacDonald (Mott MacDonald’s North America business)
is the civil and airside engineer responsible for designing and
facilitating the construction of the new passenger terminal
building at Lester B Pearson International Airport (LBPIA)
in Toronto, Canada.
The terminal redevelopment is part of a total makeover for the
airport and consists of new passenger and cargo terminals, expanded
airfield infrastructure and better public access. The whole project
is one of the largest airport undertakings in North America at over
C$4.4 billion in capital costs.
The centrepiece of the development is the new passenger terminal
complex replacing Terminals 1 and 2. The new, 300,000m² terminal
consists of 80 aircraft stands and associated works. It will
initially provide annual passenger capacity of 35 million and be
readily expandable to service future growth.
Project highlights have included the demolition and decommissioning
of Terminals 1 and 2, the administration building and the cargo
area; provision of essential works to ensure terminal operations
functioned during construction work, design of the arrivals,
departure and service roadways; new taxi lanes, aircraft aprons,
ramp areas and airside services; and design of temporary passenger
facilities at Terminals 1 and 2.
One aspect of the project that Hatch Mott MacDonald was responsible
for – the design for ten elevated frontage roads and 18 egress
roads and interchanges for the new terminal building – won the 2001
Award of Merit from the Association of Civil Engineers of Canada.
